Built in 1914, the historic Renmano Winery originally distilled brandy and fortified wines from local grapes. In the mid 1960’s it became a full winery when 130 fruit growers banded together to form The Renmark Growers’ Distillery Company.
It was the first cooperative of its kind in Australia and was a great success that boosted the local Riverland economy up until ceasing operations in 2002.
Re-opened in late 2016 as the 23rd St Distillery, the rich history of the site has been creatively blended with new age technology and architecture to deliver an open and earthy visitor centre and distilling facility.
Century old copper stills, which can be seen on a tour of the facility, are believed to be linked to Hardy’s Reynella and Tintara in McLaren Vale. Quite possibly involved in the original production of the iconic Black Bottle Brandy, the copper stills have completed the full circle, once again holding the responsibility of distilling the dark golden liquid.
The 23rd St Distillery is fully operational with Black Bottle Brandy and 23rd St Signature Gin, Brandy’s, a hybrid Whiskey and a special edition Vodka produced on site.
The Distillery is staying true to its local roots with an emphasis on using local produce to flavour the craft spirits. Local oranges used in the gin, rose petals from Ruston’s Roses in the vodka and local grapes used to create the popular, Not Your Nanna’s Brandy.
The Distillery is bringing Brandy back into fashion, surprising many younger folk at the smooth characters of the spirit traditionally drank by their Nanna’s.
A tour of the facility will give you the chance to learn more about the distilling process and the stories behind the century old site. Tours are performed at 11am, 1pm and 2pm, 7 days a week (booking recommended).
Tastings are as individual as your palate, with the opportunity to taste just a flight of Gin or a flight of Brandy. Or why not try the 23rd St signature range, the gin, both brandy’s and the hybrid whiskey.
Guests of The Frames are eligible to receive a complimentary tour and tasting at the Distillery (valued at $50 per couple). Please enquire on booking.
