It has come to that time of year when the days shorten, the wind chills you to the bone and you are left dreaming of faraway tropical islands. You long for the summer warmth and the activities it brings and are spiteful that winter has come to stay. Like a bear, you intend to wait out the winter, secluded from society, hibernating. But there is a better way to escape the winter blues than wrapping yourself in a cocoon, and it still involves a pool, sunshine and the sense of ultimate escapism from reality.
Escape the winter and warm up in one three luxurious villas at The Frames in the Riverland, South Australia. With more sunshine than the Gold Coast, the Riverland is the perfect winter wonderland to enjoy a full range of outdoor (and indoor) activities.
Your luxury villa at the Frames provides the ultimate winter escape with underfloor heating in your bathroom and heated pools, spas and saunas. You will be warmed from the inside out with hearty and nourishing gourmet meals prepared by a local chef with premium local produce and you can enjoy it all from the private seclusion of your own winter hideaway.
There is more to this luxury winter getaway than simply soaking in the warmth of the spa while gazing out over the Murray River. The Riverland is the perfect location to escape the winter blues and there are many adventures to be had beyond the spa. Here are some activities that we recommend you do, to complete your winter escape.
Cruise the Murray River
There is nothing like cruising down the calm and steady Murray River, even during winter. The warmth of the sun on your face will keep you warm and is a novel contrast to stereotypical winter days.
For a romantic sunset cruise, take a gentle ride in our 100 year old classic wooden Gondola. Enjoy a sparkling wine and cheese platter as you snuggle into your significant other to watch the evening ritual of the river. The sky beginning to blush as Whistling kites call out to one another, their distinct “tieet ti ti ti” sound synonymous with the river.
Murray River cruises aren’t just for romance and sunsets, our Backwaters Secrets cruise is full of adventure and exploring areas only the locals know. Cruise along meandering creeks while scanning the beyond the banks for kangaroos and emus. Let yourself experience the Murray River like never before as the intimacy of the backwaters steal the show.
Relax in nature
The Riverland has many walking trails waiting for you to explore, which are perfect for birdwatching or simply immersing yourself in nature. Walking is a great way to explore and fully appreciate the diverse environment of the river and floodplains.
If you like to get around a little faster, at The Frames we have electric bikes you can hire which are perfect for riding across the historical Paringa Bridge and into Renmark. If you have your own bike, fantastic, in the near future a bike trail will be formalised in the Murray River National Park-Katarapko section at Berri and also at Paringa Paddock which is even closer to your luxury winter stay.
Taste locally produced beverages
A short drive away is the Woolshed Brewery which was once a shearing shed for a sheep and wheat property, Wilkadene Station. The microbrewery is the first in the Riverland and is also situated right on the banks of the Murray River. MUST TRY: the Firehouse Stout (dark ale infused with locally roasted Arrosto coffee)
If your palate prefers wine, then a visit to 919 Wines cellar door in Glossop is the perfect stop for you. The organic and biodynamic winery produce some of the regions finest alternative varieties which embody the Riverland’s climate, soil and lifestyle. MUST TRY: their Durif, very popular full bodied red.
Canoe any time of the day
With such an extensive network of wetlands and creeks, the Riverland is a canoe enthusiast’s playground. Even if you are a novice paddler, there are some brilliant local experts that can provide you with advice on how to get in and out of the vessel without getting wet and guide you through the most stunning locations.
The water acts as a mirror on still winter mornings and river mist brings an element of magic as you canoe quietly past sleeping pelicans. Winter nights are just as spectacular as the full moon rises through a clear night and provides a unique experience, paddling through the dark of the evening.
Browse local Markets
Chilly winter mornings were made for coffee and hot breakfasts, all of which you can get at the Riverland Farmers Market, held each Saturday morning in the not too far away township of Berri. Live locally and gather farm fresh produce, dried fruit, homemade preserves, sweets and cured meats, the best kind of holiday souvenirs.
Other regional markets on throughout the year showcase local talent with stalls for handmade clothing, rustic and recycled homewares, plants and photography and artwork. Ask us if there are any markets happening during your stay.
